Playing the Bean Bag Toss Game

Shall we play a game?

When you've got a big outdoor gathering, finding games suitable for a large, all-ages group is essential - there's nothing worse than having some guests left out, others bored, and children struggling to participate. The bean bag toss game, also known as "cornhole," is a simple answer to the outdoor-party-game conundrum.

The tools required to play the game are relatively simple (you can even make your own - just add bean bags). Here, we'll give you a brief overview so you and yours can get to tossing.

Basic Setup

Essential to the bean bag toss game are two elements: a board and bean bags. Wooden (or plastic) boards are typically two feet by four feet with a single six-inch hole nine inches from the back and 12 inches from either side of the board. Its size allows it to be fitted into the bed of a truck or trunk of a car so you can play the game at tailgate parties (a popular arena). Bean bags are generally made of some type of soft cloth stuffed with beans, dried corn, or pellets.

Game Play

Though many variations of the game exist, the basic idea of the bean bag toss game is to toss bean bags into the hole in the board. The game's general point system awards a certain number of points for bags that go through the hole or land somewhere on the game board. Players or teams will continue in rounds until one player or team has scored 21 points. For more detailed rules, check out our article on rules for the bean bag toss game.
